With GCSE results out on Thursday, Make UK still has a selection of amazing apprenticeships on offer from some of Britain’s leading companies including Cadbury’s and metrology apprenticeships from  Stadco which manufacturers some of the most complex components from aluminium and steel.

A manufacturing apprenticeship is the perfect pathway to a fulfilling career, which from the start pays more than the national average offering options for those just leaving school armed with their GCSEs to full degree apprenticeships. For all apprenticeships, regardless of the apprenticeship level, students are in paid employment as they learn. The courses are a blend of practical work, hands-on experience and academic study both away from the workplace and later in the work place, with each course tailored to individual company needs.

And when an apprentice completes their course, three quarters of manufacturers confirm they keep on their trainee apprentices as full time members of their staff after graduation.

Here are a few key facts about apprenticeships which you might not know:

1. 72% of manufacturers are currently offering apprenticeships to secure the skills they need now (Source: Make UK)

2. Average pay for engineering apprentices is almost double the minimum rate (BEIS Apprentice Pay Survey)

3. Three-quarters of manufacturers say all their apprentices stay with the company after completion of their apprenticeship (Make UK, 2016)

4. 83% of manufacturers offer apprenticeships to make sure they have the skills they need for the future. (Source: Make UK)

5. Half of manufacturers offer apprenticeships to get more young people into the industry. (Source: Make UK)

6. 72% of manufacturers are offering apprenticeships because they want to acquire specific skills for their business. (Source: Make UK)

7. Three-quarters of manufacturers say all their apprentices stay with the company after completion of their apprenticeship (Make UK, 2016)

Andrea Bull, Head Next Generation Marketing at Make UK said:

“Long gone are the days when academic pathways such as university were the only options for bright, talented young people. Apprenticeships are now firmly and proudly in the spotlight and manufacturers have plans to increase the number of apprenticeships within their business.

“There are exciting opportunities within our vibrant and innovative sector. From shop floor to top floor, manufacturers are investing in the next generation of innovators, creators and makers through apprenticeships.

“We need to see more young people choosing vocational pathways and more girls pursuing STEM apprenticeships. This will widen the talent pool available to manufacturers who are keeping their doors wide open for their future leaders.”
