Electrical to mechanical maintenance

Though so many of today’s industrial manufacturing and production line systems rely very heavily on electrical and electronic systems to operate, there is still a high need for basic hand and tool skills to be able to carry out mechanical maintenance and repairs effectively. 

This four and a half day course has plenty of practical sessions aimed at introducing the delegate to basic engineering and fitting techniques while at the same time learning the theory behind them. 

Course content

During the course the delegates will broadly cover the following timetable and subject areas in depth.

  • Working Regulations – Theory
  • Mechanical Maintenance Principles – Theory

  • Basic Hand Skills

  • Basic Bench Fitting

  • Bearing removal / Fit

  • Dismantling Techniques and Locking Devices

  • Practical Dismantle Pumps / Motors

  • Gears, Clutches and Brakes - Theory& Practical

  • Couplings - Theory & Practical

  • Fixings - Theory & Practical – Split pins / Lock wire / etc.

  • Fault location / Diagnostic Assessment

  • Practical Exercise Assessment

  • Practical Exercise Assessment

  • Oils, Greases and Lubrication

  • Maintenance Schedules

They will also learn and develop

  • How to use basic hand tools (files, hacksaws, thread cutting etc.)

  • How to mark out materials and how to interpret engineering drawings and manuals

  • How to use more advanced tools (bearing pullers etc.)

  • Gain practical fault finding experience

  • Gain hands on experience of different types of machinery (gear boxes, pumps, motors etc.)

  • Gain a better understanding of health and safety regulations


Delegates do not need any previous experience of working with mechanical systems or of hand fitting though some experience would be beneficial.


Whilst there is no formal assessment on this course, delegates will need to demonstrate that they can operate safely during a maintenance task used as a consolidation exercise. On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance

By completing this course, delegates will:

The course runs over 4½ days and covers some underpinning theory The practical elements focus on the development of basic hand skills and tool usage as well as best practices for mechanical maintenance techniques. The course also introduces the delegates to basic fault finding techniques, health and safety aspects of working with a wide variety of mechanical systems. By the end of this course the delegates will have developed a good working knowledge of the safe maintenance and effect simple repairs of mechanical systems.
