Designated Safeguarding Officer/Lead Combined Children, Young People and Adults at Risk

This course will help you become familiar with the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead/ Designated Safeguarding Officer and is a bespoke course created for those performing this role within your organisation. 

You should already have a good understanding of both of the Child and  Adult abuse investigation processes under Working Together to safeguard Children (2018) and / or the Care Act 2014.

In this course you will explore the strategic elements of the role i.e., quality assurance, policy reviews, supervision and fully understand the impact of safeguarding on everyone concerned.

You will look at multi agency working and the importance of information sharing as a DSL. You will consider risk management and how to manage the most difficult cases that may involve allegations against staff.

Proposed Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the key legislation and guidance that determines your organisation’s policy for child /adult safeguarding i.e., Ofsted, CQC, IPCC, Charity Commission etc.
  • To understand the purpose and importance of the Designated Safeguarding Officer/Lead
  • Explore the emotional impact from the disclosure of abuse
  • Explore the role and responsibility of the DSO and of other Safeguarding partners.
  • Understand how to respond to those subject of concerns or allegations of abuse (HR, LADO, DBS) and to explore the difficult decisions to be made and the people they need to be made with
  • How to manage and support staff through the process of allegations/and or disclosures.
  • Understand and explore in-depth your organisations safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Understand how your own values and beliefs can affect your role and responsibilities as a DSO.
  • Identify and understand the barriers to reporting and effective information sharing.
  • Understand the duty to cooperate in multi-agency partnership working. 
  • Understand and commit to a safer culture and a risk management culture i.e., Audits, Q&A of safeguarding concerns SCR’s and SAR’s duty to co-operate
  • Keep up to date with changes in legislation and guidance around safeguarding - i.e., email alerts
  • Effect and impact of on practice due to the Covid-19 pandemic on Safeguarding

Additional Learning Outcomes

  • To promote positive safeguarding policies procedures and practices.
  • To refer cases of suspected abuse or allegations to the relevant investigating agencies.
  • To act as a source of support, advice and expertise within the organisation and liaising with relevant agencies.
  • To prepare reports including timetables of staff training, policy reviews, referrals and on-going investigations.
  • Safer working practices with children and adults at risk.
