When we talk about productivity, the conversation usually turns to technology, automation, or economic growth.

But inside organisations, the real gap often sits somewhere else:

  • It sits with managers who are technically strong but underprepared for complex people issues.
  • It sits with HR teams juggling legislative change, multigenerational expectations and sensitive life stage conversations, often without the time or space to step back and think strategically.
  • It sits in the conversations that do not happen early enough. In policies that exist on paper but are not understood in practice. In leaders who feel stretched but do not always feel able to say so.

Right now, many organisations are also preparing for ongoing workplace reforms. These changes matter, and getting the legal side right is essential. But compliance on its own does not create performance.

Productivity is built on clarity, confidence and culture. If managers lack the confidence to handle wellbeing conversations, menopause discussions, retirement transitions or generational tension, the cost shows up quietly. Increased absence. Friction between teams. Disengagement that slowly builds over time.

For HR leaders, the challenge is not just understanding policy changes. It is helping managers apply them in the reality of everyday workplace situations. That means creating space for practical discussion, shared learning and honest reflection about what people management really looks like on the ground.

During Productivity Week, it is worth asking a simple question: Are we investing enough in the people capability that underpins performance?

One way we are exploring this question is through the People Matters HR Away Day, taking place on Thursday 4 June at Woodland Grange in Royal Leamington Spa.

The event is designed to give HR professionals space to step back from day-to-day pressures and focus on the people challenges shaping organisational performance.

The day includes:

  • Clear, practical context on the latest workplace reforms
  • A deeper look at leading a multigenerational workforce
  • Practical guidance on wellbeing, menopause, retirement and inclusive conversations
  • Time to connect with peers facing many of the same challenges

The session runs from 9am to 5pm and is free to attend, with up to two places available per organisation. Places are limited.

Because sustainable productivity does not start with systems. It starts with people who feel equipped to lead.

If this gap feels familiar in your organisation, you can reserve a place at the People Matters HR Away Day here.
