This March we celebrate World Engineering Day (4 March 2026). This year’s theme, “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitalization” highlights the transformative role engineering plays in tackling global challenges through new technologies, digital solutions and forward-thinking design.
Engineering and manufacturing businesses play a vital role in this global mission – from improving energy efficiency and advancing low-carbon technologies to strengthening infrastructure and reducing waste.
Achieving this ambition requires investment in the next generation of engineers and manufacturers who can harness emerging technologies and help solve the complex challenges we face.
One way for engineering and manufacturing businesses in England to grow their talent pool is by hosting T Level industry placements. T Level students are equipped with both technical knowledge and practical experience, helping employers to develop the workforce of the future.
What are T Levels?
T Levels are a high-quality technical qualification designed to bridge the gap between education and industry. Equivalent to three A Levels, they combine classroom learning with a 45-day industry placement that’s designed flexibly around employers’ needs.
T Levels attract high calibre students, who must meet specific entry requirements and assessment criteria. Unlike work experience students, T Level students arrive at their placement equipped with the technical knowledge they need to hit the ground running.
Developed in partnership with engineering & manufacturing employers, T Levels ensure students learn the skills businesses truly need.
This year’s World Engineering Day (WED) highlights the role of smart engineering, innovation and digitalisation in shaping a more sustainable future. T Level students can explore engineering through this lens — applying sustainable thinking, new technologies and digital skills during their industry placements, while supporting businesses to progress towards their sustainability goals.
The benefits of hosting a T Level industry placement
T Level students come with up-to-date knowledge, ready to work on meaningful tasks. They can introduce new ideas and innovative approaches that align with your business’s sustainability goals.
Offering a T Level industry placement is a proven way to find and secure new talent for your business. The placement is like an extended interview, where you can test if candidates are a good fit. Many employers go on to offer their T Level students permanent roles at the end of their course, either directly or as an apprenticeship.
T Level students are equipped with the latest industry knowledge, ensuring they have the skills your business needs for a greener future – aligning with WED’s goals.
Engineering and manufacturing have historically been male-dominated fields. WED is a reminder that a sustainable future requires diverse talent and fresh perspectives. Offering T Level placements to students from all backgrounds helps challenge stereotypes, showing young people that engineering is a viable career path for anyone with the passion and skills to succeed.
