Manufacturing is under sustained pressure - from rising costs and skills shortages to increasing levels of work‑related ill health. Against this backdrop, Make UK’s latest research provides the clearest picture yet of how wellbeing is truly experienced across the sector.

Drawing on independent surveys of senior leaders and shopfloor employees, the report uncovers a striking perception gap: while leaders believe they are proactive on health and wellbeing, many employees experience something far more reactive. Policies exist, but they are not always understood. Risk assessments are carried out, but actions are not consistently visible. Training is strong for physical health, yet far weaker for stress and psychological wellbeing. The consequences are real. Employees link declining wellbeing to lower morale, reduced productivity, and increased absence but they also identify clear, practical steps that would make a meaningful difference.

This report sets out where the sector stands today, why wellbeing must now be treated with the same rigour as safety, and how manufacturers can turn intent into lived experience.
