Nothing could be more representative of manufacturing itself than the quality and contribution of its output – both components and finished goods in all their detail and variety. Your image might be of a product or component invented, designed or made in the UK, the process of manufacturing it or the people involved in creating it.
There are four categories for entry in to this year's Make UK Photography Competition:
Next Generation
Apprentices and young people engaging in production, skills, training, and STEM learning environments.
Future Technology
Automation, robotics, digital, and clean and sustainable technologies.
Manufacturing Process
The journey from design and R&D to and including the production line.
Manufacturing Products
The finished component or product from a range of manufacturing sectors, from food and drink, automotive, electronics and aerospace to pharmaceuticals and furniture.
Each category will have one winner from each skill level:
Best photograph by a Professional photographer
Best photograph by an Amateur photographer
Best photograph by a Young photographer (under 20 years old)
Tips
Think creatively - Manufacturing is more than just materials and products, its also about people, design, change, solutions, the future and more.
Overall, the judges will be looking for strong images that raise questions in people’s minds. Does the image provoke surprise or admiration? Will people look at it and say: “I didn’t realise that was part of our UK manufacturing base”? Will it make people wish they had taken the picture and captured this message?
Because we want to find a new set of iconic images which portray the boldness and creativity of UK manufacturing, the quality of its output – products, components and processes - we want your images to reflect a new and contemporary identity which truly showcases the UK manufacturing industry.
The aim of the competition is to promote manufacturing, engineering and related careers in the UK.
For the purposes of this competition, architecture and agriculture are not manufacturing – BUT, related industries such as brick making or the huge and vital food and drinks sector very much are manufacturing.
Images of manufacturing by foreign companies in Britain are just as welcome as those of home-grown companies.
Manufacturing is not just about process and machinery – it is driven by skilled, highly trained people from all backgrounds.
Some sections of manufacturing have an image problem – male-dominated grimy factories. The reality is often very different and photographs are a great way to show this.
Do ensure what you are photographing really is ‘Made in Britain’ – it is vital to explain what you are photographing in the image description. Describe exactly what is being made, how, where and by whom.
The judges want to see UK manufacturing images that showcase properties such as excitement, dynamism, innovation, world-beating and Made in Britain.
Think outside the box – manufacturing is not just ‘metal bashing’.
Self-edit – don’t send in 18 versions of the same image. Choose the very best and just submit one or at most two.
Rules
Condition of Registration and Entry
1. By registering and entering the Make UK Photography Competition you agree to these rules and all other terms and conditions.
Eligibility
2. All elements of the work submitted must have been originated by the entrant. While some retouching may have been applied, a significant majority of the final image must remain as shot.
3. Work submitted must not have previously been entered into another competition, including previous Make UK Photography Competitions (previously known as the Make UK Photography Awards).
4. Those who enter may not be included on the judging panel, attend the judging process, or be involved in any part of the judging procedure.
5. No employee of Make UK or sponsor / partner organisations of the competition or their families shall be entitled to enter. Private, supplementary competitions may be administered alongside these categories, for which all other rules apply.
6. Photographs must reflect engineering or manufacturing through products, components or processes that have been made in Britain. Entries need not be confined to British companies so long as they are located in Britain.
7. Entrants under the age of 18 must obtain parental consent prior to submitting their image(s).
Entry Procedure and Format
8. Entry to the Make UK Photography Competition is free of charge and there is no limit on the number of images that you can enter to the relevant category.
9. Entries for the Make UK Photography Competition should be submitted on-line via the entry website, which is linked from: www.Make UK.org.uk/photo.
10. Entrants must agree to complete the required entry fields in the online process.
11. No prints will be accepted.
12. An image may only be entered in to one category and skill level - Amateur, Professional or Young (under 20 on 7th October 2018).
13. Professional images are judged purely as photographs and not as an adjunct to design and art direction. Therefore no copy should appear on your photograph.
14. The entrant’s name must not appear anywhere on the actual image/work.
Image Specifications
15. Images should satisfy the following:
15.1. RGB format
15.2. High-quality JPEG file (level 10 or above in Photoshop)
15.3. The maximum and ideal image size is 3508 x 2480 pixels or 3508 x 3508 pixels if square
15.4. Minimum image size 2400 x 1800 pixels
15.5. Alpha-numeric file names ending in ‘.jpg’.
16. Each image must be accompanied by the following information:
16.1. Entrant’s Name
16.2. Company (or school or college)
16.3. Full postal address
16.4. Telephone number
16.5. Email address
16.6. Image category and skill level
16.7. Image title
16.8. Image caption (to include name and location of the facility / production site)
17. Name your image as you wish but please note that they will be re-named within the entry website system, to identify them uniquely as yours whilst preserving anonymity during judging. However, during upload, your own file name must contain only the letters A-Z (in upper or lower case) and / or the numbers 0-9 and / or the underscore character ("_”) plus the suffix ".jpg”. Any other characters including further dots, hyphens or spaces could result in your file being rejected during the upload process.
18. Each photograph must be accompanied by a caption (narrative) between 50 and 100 words to express why and / or how the image portrays modern manufacturing in Britain; in keeping with the themes of the Make UK Photography Competition.
Dates & deadlines
19. Entries should be submitted from 1 June 2018 to midnight on 7th October 2018.
Judging
20. Entries will be judged by an independent and impartial panel of judges.
21. All images will be judged digitally.
22. Short listing will take place in October 2018.
23. The short listed entries will be announced on the Make UK Photography Competition website from November 2018.
24. Judging will take place in November 2018.
25. The judges will then select the best Professional, Amateur and Young entry in each of the following Categories:

Successful Entries
26. The shortlisted entries will be displayed on the Photography Competition website.
27. The shortlisted entrants will be invited to attend the Photography Competition ceremony; date and venue to be advised.
28. The winning images of each category will be announced at the Photography Competition ceremony; date and venue to be advised.
29. The successful, winning entries will be displayed indefinitely on the Photography Competition website, as a record of achievement.
Copyright
30. No copyright is transferred in respect of any images entered.
31. By submitting an image, you agree that Make UK Ltd. and any of its partners can display, distribute, publish and alter any of the images in their activities to promote and support UK manufacturing for a period of five years.
32. By entering the Make UK Photography Competition, entrants agree to their photographs being used for publicity purposes. Successful entries will be reproduced and may be used in various activities in connection with the Make UK Photography Competition, which may include the internet, other electronic media, publications or events.
33. Where necessary, entrants must have permission from the client and photographer to submit the work. The entrant shall be deemed to warrant that they own the entire copyright in the work.
34. The entrant undertakes to indemnify the organisers and their partners and sponsors of the Make UK Photography Competition in respect of any breach of the above warranty.
General
35. The organisers reserve the right to use its own discretion throughout the Make UK Photography Competition process which may include, but is not limited to: disqualifying any entrant not complying with the rules; disqualifying any entries not deemed suitable for the Make UK Photography Competition; amalgamating categories if they are under-subscribed; changing or removing the category headings when the selected images are published.
36. There will be no appeals against the decision of the judges and correspondence cannot be entered into regarding the judging.
37. Work will not be moved from one category to another by the judges, as it will be assumed that you will understand, before entering, which category best suits the image(s) entered. So be sure you read, and are aware of, the requirements for the categories first.
38. Any successful entrant to the Make UK Photography Competition may be called upon during the following year to participate in any appropriate marketing and PR activities for and on behalf of the organisers.
39. People in your images – If anyone is identifiable in your image/s you must have written consent from them to be able to enter. Please see an example consent form here and you may be required to present a completed form at shortlisting.
Photography Competition Privacy Statement
Make UK collects, stores and processes information about you if you enter our competition. This information includes your name and contact details. We collect and use this data to communicate relevant information about the Make UK Photography Competition, to share entry details with the panel of judges, announce the winning entries and to notify participants of future Make UK photography events. When you register as a user, we will collect information necessary to validate your registration and entry.
Data protection law specifies the legal grounds on which we can hold and use personal data. These include that it is in our legitimate interests to do so in order to run the photography competition, you have given your consent and/or it is necessary in order to perform the contract we have entered into.
We share your personal information with a third party hosting service who manages the competition for us. They are not authorised by us to use or disclose your information except where it is necessary to do so. Your name and image will be also be shared externally with the panel of judges in order to complete the Competition process. They are obliged to keep your details securely, and to use them only to fulfil the judging process for the applicable year. Your name and image will also be used for Marketing, Social Media and PR activities to promote and support the Make UK photography Competition and UK Manufacturing for a period of five years.
We will endeavour to keep your information accurate and up to date, and not keep it for longer than we need it for our legitimate purposes.
Make UK will not sell your personal information or otherwise disclose this data, except as described in this privacy statement. Your additional consent will be sought for any unrelated marketing purposes.
