The Government has today published a call for evidence on creating a £250m Clean Steel Fund, which closes on 21 November 2019. BEIS is intending for the fund to focus on:

  1. transition to lower carbon iron and steel production through new technologies and processes, placing the sector on a pathway that is consistent with the UK Climate Change Act (net zero)
  2. maximise longevity and resilience in the UK steel sector by building on longstanding expertise and skills and harnessing clean growth opportunities

Commenting on the Government announcement of the Clean Steel Fund, Gareth Stace, UK Steel Director General, said:

“Today’s announcement of the Clean Steel Fund is extremely positive news for UK steelmakers and the whole of the UK’s decarbonisation efforts. The fund is a vital step towards further reducing our carbon footprint here in the UK and will cement our position in a future low-carbon world."
