IOA certificate in workplace noise assessments

IOA certificate in workplace noise assessments, accredited by Institute of Acoustics (IOA), is aimed at personnel who need to be able to carry out workplace noise assessments and devise effective company noise management programmes to comply with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

The course is designed to provide delegates with a full understanding of noise and its properties, the Noise at Work Regulations 2005, and noise assessment. Learners will gain practical experience of industrial noise measurements and associated assessment of workplace noise exposure.

Make UK run this face-to-face course at our Technology Hub and this course include a practical demonstration and advice using the very latest noise measurement equipment, giving delegates valuable hands-on learning to support classroom-based studies.

The course takes place over 5-days, with the examination held on the final day. For your convenience, costs quoted are inclusive of tuition, course materials, assessment, and certificate, which is awarded for successful completion of the qualification.

Upon successful completion, leaners will appreciate the nature of noise hazards in the workplace and the need to protect the hearing of employees. They’ll also be able to advise and assist employers to meet statutory duties relating to noise in the workplace as well as obtaining a much sought after qualification endorsed by the Institute of Acoustics.

Course content

After completing the course, candidates should be able to:

  • Explain the requirements of the current legislation and regulations.
  • Understand the elements of a noise risk assessment, and the part that noise exposure assessment plays.
  • Make suitable and sufficient measurements of noise levels in workplaces.
  • Assess daily noise exposure levels of employees from information about noise levels and work patterns.
  • Advise on the components of a noise action plan.
  • Select suitable hearing protection.
  • Identify areas where noise reduction is required and discuss basic noise control techniques.
  • Assess the effectiveness of noise control measures.
  • Pre-requisites

    No specific qualifications are required prior to completing this course. Students will need to be numerate and to be able to carry out scientific calculations. Delegates are requested to bring a scientific calculator but Make UK can provide if given prior notice. Delegates may like to bring their own noise measuring equipment, but this is not required.

    Assessment

    Assessment dates are set by the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), usually in Spring and Autumn, but will take place at Make UK’s Technology Hub in Aston. The dates are organised as such so that the examination will take place on the final day of the 5-day course.

    To obtain a Certificate, a candidate is required to;

  • Pass both parts of a 2-hour written examination
  • Produce a competent report following a practical test
  • Successful candidates are awarded a certificate of competence, validated by the IOA.

    Following completion of this course, delegates may choose to attain the:

  • IOA certificate in the management of occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration
  • IOA certificate in environmental noise measurement
  • The Certificate may be used towards satisfying the educational requirements for Technician membership of the IOA (TechIOA).
