Surface grinding training

Today’s industrial manufacturing lines rely heavily on computer controlled electrical and electronic systems to operate, but there is still a need for basic machine tool skills to be able to carry out manufacturing processes effectively.  These skills and knowledge also underpin the more advanced techniques used in operating and setting CNC type machines.

This five-day Surface Grinding training course gives delegates the skills and knowledge they need safely to operate a Surface Grinder to produce a variety of highly accurate ground surfaces on engineering products.

  • Course content
  • The course runs over 5 days and covers some underpinning theory but focusses heavily on the practical application of this knowledge using a Surface Grinder.  The course is mainly workshop based using an XYZ 2010 surface grinder.

Using a combination of relevant theory and hands-on instruction and practise, delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to make the most productive use of a Surface Grinding machine to produce a variety of ground surfaces.

During the course the delegates will broadly cover the subject areas in depth.

    • Identification of machine controls
    • Safety considerations
    • Selecting the wheel
    • Work holding and setting techniques

    o Magnetic chuck
    o Vice
    o Vee block

    • Dressing the face of the grinding wheel
    • Using a radius dresser to create internal and external radii
    • Setting traverse stops
    • Rough and finish grinding
    • Grinding operations

    o Flat face
o Grinding two opposite sides – flat and parallel
o Grinding flat face and shoulder
o Grinding two vertical faces parallel and central

    • Common faults and rectification
    • Inspection of work
  • Pre-requisites
  • Delegates do not need any previous experience of practice in the use of surface grinding machines or processes though some engineering or manufacturing knowledge may prove to be beneficial.
  • Assessment
  • Whilst there is no formal assessment on this course, delegates will need to demonstrate that they can operate a surface grinding machine safely and effectively to accurately produce a component.  On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.

  • Career progression:

This course is aimed at employees who have little or no experience of Surface Grinding Machines or processes or those who simply need to refresh their skill and knowledge in this area.  It is ideal for those delegates who are wish to be able to manufacture parts and components or want to broaden their overall engineering skill set.  The course is also useful for anyone who needs to be able to read drawings and use basic measurement instruments (micrometer and vernier).
