Make UK has secured a major win for manufacturers, with the Government confirming a six-month qualifying period for unfair dismissal in the Employment Rights Bill.

This follows months of sustained engagement with Ministers, unions, Peers and backbenchers, and reflects the concerns our members raised directly with us.

While many businesses supported moving away from the current two-year threshold, a shift to day-one rights would have gone too far, risking a significant disincentive to hire - particularly for candidates returning to work or needing extra support in their first months of employment.

The six-month period strikes a more balanced approach and supports the Government’s wider ambition to reduce economic inactivity, including among the growing number of young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).

Despite this welcome change, the Bill remains vast in scope. More than 20 consultations are still to come, covering issues such as guaranteed hours, trade union reform and Fire and Rehire.

Make UK will continue to lead the conversation to ensure these reforms are delivered in a way that supports business, protects good jobs and keeps our sector competitive.

We are proud of the influence our members give us — and today’s decision shows the real impact Make UK continues to have on national policy.

Stephen Phipson CBE, CEO, Make UK said:

“Manufacturers will applaud the Government for its decision to amend the Bill to include a six month qualifying period for unfair dismissal. It will give employers the confidence to continue to recruit employees, who remain the lifeblood of manufacturing businesses, who offer high quality high paid jobs up and down the country.

“We are grateful to the Government for their ongoing, and constructive dialogue on the Bill. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government, unions and fellow business groups to ensure the successful implementation of the Bill that offers protection and flexibility for employers and employees alike."
