Rebecca Gornall was advised not to go straight to the NEBOSH Diploma without first completing the NEBOSH Certificate. While many questioned her Diploma entry route, she was determined to prove it could be done, with support from Make UK's tutors and fellow learners.
Background
Having spent years in a family business, Rebecca gained an interest in health and safety through workplace responsibilities, first aid and staff training. As the future of the business became uncertain, she began exploring a career in health and safety.
Why Make UK
Rather than beginning with the NEBOSH Certificate, Rebecca chose to progress directly to the Diploma.
Although many people recommended the more traditional route, she felt that, if the higher-level qualification was her ultimate goal, she should take on the challenge.
Make UK supported her ambition.
The learning experience
Despite not having completed the NEBOSH Certificate, Rebecca successfully tackled the Diploma, gaining extensive knowledge, practical skills and confidence along the way.
Learning alongside professionals from different sectors exposed her to real-world health and safety challenges and practical approaches.
"The learning wasn't just from the course content. It was from hearing other people's experiences and from different industries."
Impact
Completing the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma helped Rebecca realise she was capable of more than she had imagined.
From having limited experience in health and safety, she developed the confidence and credibility needed to secure a new role with a major industrial organisation.
