Ben Horseman of RSM explains their involvement with EEF's Future Manufacturing Awards - and why it’s so important to celebrate UK manufacturing

We are proud to support the manufacturing sector through our sponsorship of the Business Growth and Strategy category in the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2018. We have many clients in the manufacturing sector and it has a vital role to play in our UK economy as it accounts for more than 40% of UK exports and 70% of business R&D investment.

A large proportion of our client base is made up of UK manufacturers and we pride ourselves on understanding their business. We are passionate about recognising and celebrating success in the sector because it helps to drive innovation and unites an industry that plays such a key role in the wider UK economy.

The Future awards programme provides a great opportunity to showcase all of the fantastic things that are happening in the industry. This award particularly appealed to us as a leading professional services firm, as we spend much of our time supporting our clients with their growth and strategic ambitions. The awards are a good fit for us, given our experience in the sector and our national coverage with 37 offices across the UK.

Business growth in manufacturing is becoming more and more difficult with an ageing workforce, rising labour and energy costs and increased industrial legislation making it harder for manufacturers to remain competitive. Firms must contend with financial and political changes whilst simultaneously weathering significant uncertainty too.

We saw some fantastic applications for the business growth and strategy award. There were many great examples in areas such as: market share growth in a new industry segment or overseas market; investment made in technology/factory/staff; new products and services which led to new customers; entering new markets and increased distribution.

The regional awards were very well attended, with many well-known and high-profile businesses represented. The winners and runners-up should be particularly proud of their approach during a volatile political time, while also dealing with the significant challenges that manufacturing in the UK holds in 2018.

A national judging day took place in mid-December where we got a chance to meet all of the regional award winners in our category and we are excited about attending the national awards dinner in January.
