Commenting on the Education Select Committee’s ten-year plan for school and college funding, a spokesperson at Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation said:
“The growing gap between pupil funding and pupil numbers continues to be alarming. Schools and particularly colleges are increasingly cutting STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) courses through lack of funding. Without sufficient courses and suitably qualified teachers, the pipeline of talent manufacturers are crying out for, will simply not be there.”
“We welcome the increase in funding per FE student that the Education Select Committee proposes ahead of the Spending Review, but we need to pick up the pace if we are to compete on the global stage. Government must look at ensuring STEM from the early years right through the education system is sufficiently funded, particularly for vocational courses. With an already yawning skills gap, it is vital education and training are at the forefront of Government policy in a post-Brexit world.”
