Commenting on today’s PMI data, Seamus Nevin, Chief Economist at Make UK, the manufacturers’ organisation, said:

“UK manufacturing performance is continuing to delve depths unseen outside of the current pandemic with the rates of contraction in orders, output, and exports last month were among the worst in history. Employment is also falling rapidly and it is now vital that Government works with industry to establish a National Skills Force to retain key talent in the sector.
 
“In addition, given the extent of the damage to date direct financial support should be provided to manufacturers in key strategic sectors to protect vital supply chains across all regions of the UK.”
