Commenting on the Government’s new Global Tariff regime, Stephen Phipson CEO of Make UK, the manufacturer’s organisation said:
Today’s tariff announcement goes some way to providing clarity for business on what a post-Brexit trading environment will look like. At the top level, the announcement does represent a better balance between consumer and producer interests than earlier proposals –to increase the percentage of tariff free products from 47% to 60% (rather than 87% previously).

But industry needs time to drill down into the detail and look for critical business issues. We will continue to work closely with Government to help make this process workable for manufacturers already struggling to come back as we slowly come out of the current COVID crisis.

Industry across the board needs the government to secure a comprehensive trade agreement with the EU, and that it can be implemented smoothly and effectively. Government is confident it can deliver this during the rest of this year – industry is expecting it to deliver on that promise.
