In a crunch week for politics and UK manufacturers, Stephen Phipson, CEO of Make UK, and Oliver Zander, chairman of CEEMET the council of European employers, spoke to Robert Lea from the Times about the danger Brexit poses to industry.

European manufacturers say their position is straightforward: Europe is a strong industrial cluster of businesses in global competition with the US and China and the Far-East. Britain is a strong part of that cluster, fully integrated into a European-wide supply chain. If the UK leaves that, it will be weakened and so too will the EU.

Make UK hammered home the point that since the EU referendum three and a half years ago, 125,000 jobs have been or will be lost in manufacturing businesses in this country. Moreover, British manufacturers export £270 billion of goods each year, of which roughly half is trade with the European Union.
