What can we do about the skills gap?

During 2018 HM Government is running the Year of Engineering to help inspire the next generation of engineers.

We are working with all kinds of organisations to showcase the variety and creativity of modern engineering: improving understanding of what engineers do and increasing the appeal of an engineering career. Could you help support the campaign?

Year of Engineering launch event at the Science Museum

There is much incredible activity already happening to encourage young people into the sector. During the Year of Engineering, we aim to unify and amplify these efforts working hand in hand with partners in the engineering, charity and STEM education sectors.

We want to give young people, their families and teachers an opportunity to ‘take a closer look’ at engineering. And in doing so, create greater, lasting impact - building the momentum and scale that will deliver real change.

Engineering matters

Engineering is undervalued and misunderstood and not only among the young – only a third of parents know what people in engineering do.

The Year of Engineering will improve the desirability of engineering as a career: increasing awareness and understanding amongst young people, their families and their teachers of what engineers do by:

1. offering direct and inspiring experiences of engineering;
2. encouraging families to ‘take a closer look’ at engineering; and
3. showcasing the variety and creativity of modern engineering.

How to get involved?

We are inviting organisations that can help reflect the huge contribution engineering makes to support the Year of Engineering.

You can do anything from running events and initiatives to inspire young engineers to providing case studies and engaging local media, all under the Year of Engineering banner #YoE.

 We look forward to working with you to put engineering in the spotlight in 2018.
